How to Make Hearing Aid Batteries Last Longer

Thanks to extensive research and development over the years, hearing aids are more advanced than ever. They're equipped with a whole host of features, from smartphone compatibility to tinnitus therapy, to suit users' individual lifestyles and hearing loss. While these advancements are incredibly valuable, they also require more battery power. These extra capabilities drain energy faster and, as a result, shorten your hearing aid's battery life. That's why a lot of hearing aid users are interested to know what they can do to make their batteries last as long as possible.

1. When you're not using your device, leave the battery compartment open.

If you're like most people, your home is probably stocked with extra hearing aid batteries at all times. However, where you store your hearing aid batteries can affect how much power you get out of them. Like all batteries, hearing aid batteries are influenced by temperature and moisture. While it might seem to make the most sense to keep them in your bathroom medicine cabinet, that’s probably not the best place because bathrooms tend to have high humidity levels. Instead, store them in your bedside table or elsewhere around the home where dry conditions are more common.

2. Store your batteries at room temperature.

3. Switch to rechargeable hearing aids.

More and more manufacturers now offer rechargeable behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids to help make life more convenient. The latest rechargeable hearing aids can last all day on a single charge. At night, you can simply place them on the charging station. After a few hours, they'll be fully charged and ready to go. Some even come with portable charging units for on-the-go use. Most rechargeable hearing aids are equipped with lithium-ion batteries, which are the same type used to power cell phones and laptops. Because they last such a long time, rechargeable batteries can go years without ever needing to be replaced.

The best thing about rechargeable hearing aids is that they offer all the same benefits as the kind that uses disposable batteries. From excellent speech clarity to remote controls to directional microphones, you can get all the features you want and need on top of easy charging.
